Ethereum (ETH) wallet provider MetaMask is reportedly adding support for Bitcoin (BTC).
A MetaMask spokesperson highlighted the company's dedication to a multichain Web3 environment and mentioned ongoing innovations to improve usability and security. Although they could not confirm a specific timeline for the Bitcoin integration, they promised to share updates when available.
Meanwhile, other sources indicate that Bitcoin functionality might be available on MetaMask within the next month. Initially, features could be limited, but they are expected to expand over time.
Currently, MetaMask supports Ethereum and its associated tokens, including ERC-20 tokens like Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC), which links Bitcoin to the Ethereum network. The upcoming integration will allow MetaMask users to manage Bitcoin directly within the wallet, simplifying the process compared to using wrapped tokens.
MetaMask has been actively enhancing its multichain capabilities over the past few months. Earlier in September 2023, the wallet provider added the Snaps functionality, which allowed integration with non-Ethereum blockchains. Similarly, the firm struck a partnership with PayPal to provide direct access to Etherum trading services, in addition to its new staking service for running Ethereum validator nodes.
