In the words of project coordinator Tim Beiko, “So imagine Goerli happens on the 14th, everything goes well, on the 16th we agree to move forward with mainnet — I think the earliest that puts us is like the first week of April.”
Ethereum (ETH) developers have delayed the release of the Shanghai upgrade until early April. Instead, the devs will launch the Shapella hard fork on the Goerli testnet on March 14.
According to Beiko, the update will allow most staking node providers to test whether users can unstake their assets. This is because, unlike the Sepolia testnet, Goerli also allows permission-less validators to test their setups.
In a recent conference, most of the developers supported the plan to delay the Shanghai upgrade, with Matt Nelson noting,
“I have a feeling that when a lot of the public validators are testing, we’ll uncover a slew of more issues.”
Similarly, Noelle Acheson, former head of market insights at Genesis, claimed that deferring the Shanghai upgrade by a month will allow analysts to assess the impact of the update on the price of Ethereum.
The software update on Goerli will be the last of the three testnet upgrades before Shanghai’s release on the mainnet.
Last week, the devs launched the Shapella update on the Sepolia testnet. Although the developers found some issues after its release, the update’s deployment was largely successful.
