Crypto exchange Coinbase's layer-2 solution, Base, has achieved a significant milestone, boasting approximately 4 million active addresses last week, as it continues to drive its “Onchain Summer” campaign forward.
Jesse Pollak, head of Base, shared the latest data from Dune Analytics, revealing that the layer-2 network reached a record high in weekly active addresses. “Over 4 million active addresses were on the blockchain last week,” Pollak confirmed, marking a new peak for the network.
This surge in activity coincides with the ongoing “Onchain Summer” campaign, which incentivizes developers to build on the Base network.
Base Rewards Builders Through Summer Campaign
In 2023, Base launched its “Onchain Summer” event, aiming to foster adoption of its layer-2 network. The month-long event saw 268,000 wallets mint over 700,000 non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on the network. The promotion also resulted in more than $242 million in crypto being bridged to Base, with over 130,000 unique wallets interacting daily.
Following its success, Base revived the event in 2024, urging developers to innovate on the blockchain. The network explained that it seeks to “unleash onchain creativity” and has allocated 600 Ether, worth $2 million, in rewards for participants building on Base. The campaign, which began in June, is set to conclude in August.
Bringing Classic Video Games ‘Onchain’
As part of the Onchain Summer campaign, Base teamed up with video game developer Atari's Web3 division, AtariX, to introduce classic games to the blockchain. On July 25, AtariX announced the launch of its classic arcade game on Base through an “onchain” arcade. Players were required to mint an NFT pass to access the game and compete for leaderboard rankings.
However, the integrity of the "onchain" claim was called into question. On August 5, Stackr Labs founder and CEO Kautuk Kundan asserted that he had hacked Atari’s arcade game leaderboard without playing, suggesting the game was not truly on the blockchain, despite being marketed as such.
