The latest update from AllCoreDevs stated, “We currently have a tentative set of EIPs included in the next network upgrade, Dencun (Deneb + Cancun).”

According to project coordinator Tim Beiko, Ethereum’s core developers are already in the final stages of planning the next major update for the ETH network.

The update, titled “Dencun,” will implement proto-danksharding (EIP-4844) as its core feature. EIP-4844 will add a new transaction type that can carry data via “blobs.” The proposal aims to reduce the computational load on Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) and decrease transaction costs on layer 2 networks.

The developers also intend to release EIP-1153 in the Dencun update. Earlier planned for the Shanghai upgrade, EIP-1153 will lower gas fees and simplify EVM design by adding transient storage facility to Ethereum transactions.

The Dencun upgrade will also implement two other proposals: EIP-6780 and EIP-6475. EIP-6780 will deactivate the SELFDESTRUCT opcode, a function that allows developers to destroy Ethereum smart contracts.  On the other hand, EIP-6475 will add a Simple Serialize (SSZ) transaction type to make the implementation of proto-danksharding more future-proof.

However, the developers have yet to release a roadmap for the Dencun update. Ethereum’s founder, Vitalik Buterin, earlier claimed that developers will release three major updates, the Verge, the Purge, and the Splurge, for the Ethereum blockchain in the coming years. As of writing, the Ethereum Verge is expected to be deployed after the launch of the Dencun update.
